If your roofing and drainage setup is working correctly, it is caught by your gutters and channeled safely away. If not, it drops directly onto the ground immediately adjacent to your foundation walls.

The earth immediately surrounding a foundation is called the backfill zone. During construction, builders dig a large trench, pour the foundation, and then push the excavated dirt back in. This backfill soil is naturally loose and less compact than the surrounding undisturbed earth, making it act like a giant sponge. When routing your extensions, always ensure the water flows downhill away from the house. Never direct your downspout runoff toward a neighboring property or a shared walkway where it could freeze into a slip hazard during winter months. If you use underground corrugated pipes, make sure they are solid rather than perforated near the house; you want to transport the water away, not leak it right back into your foundation soil.

Conducting a Foundation Grading DIY Check

To fix a negative slope using DIY methods, follow these systematic steps:

  1. Clear the Area: Pull back any decorative mulch, rocks, or landscape fabric from the affected area so you are working directly with the soil.
  2. Choose the Right Soil: Avoid using pure topsoil or lightweight potting mix, as these materials compress easily and retain too much moisture. Instead, look for a standard topsoil and clay mix (often sold as fill dirt or landscaping mix) that will pack tightly and shed water efficiently.
  3. Build Up the Slope: Shovel the new soil against the foundation wall, creating a high point just below the siding or brick ledge. Taper the soil downward as you move away from the house, ensuring the slope drops consistently.

Addressing Hardscape Drainage and Patio Slopes
